Why live matters

A static word cloud is a summary. A live one is a conversation starter. When people see their own word appear and grow on the screen, they pay attention in a way they do not for a slide of bullet points.

The display view is built for that moment. Once you reveal results, it shows the cloud at presentation size, with the most common answers largest, so the back row can read it. Your host console shows responses straight away, and after the reveal the display updates as new answers arrive, which gives you something to react to out loud.

Tips for a better cloud

Ask for one word, not a sentence. The input is a single line capped at 40 characters, and shorter prompts give you cleaner clusters. Keep the question concrete, because abstract prompts tend to scatter into one-off answers.

Decide about anonymity before you start. Anonymous mode tends to produce more honest answers on sensitive topics, while named mode can be better for a small class where you want to follow up. Both are options when you create the session.

Be aware that very similar spellings may count as different answers. 'Stress' and 'stressed' can appear separately, so a quick note to the room about spelling helps.

How it works

Get started in minutes

1

Write a prompt people can answer in one word

Good prompts are specific and quick: 'One word for how you feel about Monday', or 'What comes to mind when you hear photosynthesis?'.

2

Put the join link or QR code where everyone can see it

Drop the link in chat or show the QR code on a slide. Participants open it on their own device and type an answer.

3

Show the display view and talk through the result

Open the display page on your projector or share your screen. It shows a waiting message until you reveal results; your host console shows responses straight away. Once revealed, the cloud updates as answers arrive. Point at the biggest words first, then ask about the unexpected small ones.

Perfect for every team

One tool for standups, classrooms, Q&A, and more

📚

Lessons and lectures

Open with prior knowledge, close with a takeaway. Both take under a minute and give you a read on the room.

🏢

All-hands and retros

Ask how the sprint felt in one word. Anonymous mode makes the less comfortable answers easier to give.

🎤

Keynotes

Ask a question before the talk and refer back to the biggest words as you speak.

🧩

Workshops

Capture first impressions before discussion starts, so the loudest voice does not set the agenda.

💻

Remote and hybrid sessions

Everyone answers on their own screen, so remote and in-room people take part equally.

🎈

Community events

Ask a fun question at the start of a meetup to get the room talking.

Frequently asked questions

What is a live word cloud?
A live word cloud is a word cloud built from answers people submit during a session. Instead of analysing existing text, you ask a question and the cloud grows while the audience responds. The more often a word is submitted, the larger it appears.
How do participants join?
They open a link or scan a QR code on any phone, tablet, or laptop. Nothing to install. You decide whether they are anonymous, asked for a name, or required to sign in.
Does it work in Zoom, Teams, or Google Meet?
Yes, in the practical sense. Paste the join link in the meeting chat and share your browser tab with the display view. It is a separate web page, not a built-in plugin for those apps.
Is there a limit on how many people can answer?
We do not advertise a participant cap on this feature, but we have not published load-test numbers either. For a very large event, run a small rehearsal with your real audience size first.
Can people submit more than one word?
Each participant gives one answer per word cloud question, up to 40 characters, so a word or a short phrase. Submitting again while the question is open replaces their earlier answer.
Is it really free?
Creating and running a session is free, with no signup for hosts or participants. A paid plan is planned but not available yet, and nothing free today is moving behind it.
