Split by

With a set number of groups, sizes always differ by at most one.

Optional: group names and keep-apart rules

People on the same line will never share a group. Names must match the list, ignoring capital letters.

Shuffled in your browser with the Web Crypto API. Names are not uploaded or stored.

Your groups will appear here

Add names on the left, pick how to split them, and press Make groups.

When a random team generator is the fair option

Picking groups by hand tends to go wrong in predictable ways. The same friends end up together, the quiet person is chosen last, and whoever is choosing gets accused of playing favorites. Letting a random draw decide removes the argument, and it also mixes people who would not have paired up on their own, which is half the point of most group activities.

This tool does that draw for you. It takes your list, shuffles it with your browser's cryptographic random generator, and deals people into groups. You can ask for a number of groups (for example, 5 groups from a class of 28) or a group size (teams of 4), and you decide how to handle the awkward remainder.

Handling uneven groups and people who should be apart

Twenty-three people do not split into teams of four. Rather than hiding that, the tool gives you three honest options: spread the extras so sizes differ by at most one, let the last group be smaller, or keep every group at exactly four and show the leftover people as unassigned so you can place them as substitutes, judges or a bonus team.

Keep-apart rules cover the other classic problem. Two students who distract each other, two coworkers who already share a project, or siblings at a family game night can be put on one line, and the generator will not place them together. If the rules are impossible for the number of groups you chose, you will see a plain message saying so instead of a result that quietly ignores the rule.

  • Teachers: use a group count to match the number of tables, then print the result for the board.
  • Facilitators: use people per group for breakout rooms and name the groups after the topics.
  • Game hosts: name the teams, use the big view on a projector, and re-shuffle between rounds.

Team picker for games, class and work

If you searched for a team picker, this is the same tool. Add everyone who is playing, choose the team size or the number of teams, and press Make groups. Nobody picks, so nobody gets picked last. Re-shuffle if the first split does not suit the room, but agree beforehand how many re-rolls you allow.

To choose one person rather than build teams, the random picker draws a single name, and the random order generator sets a turn sequence.

Taking the groups live

Once the groups exist, you may want them to do something visible: answer a poll, vote on ideas, or report back in turn. ShuffleTurn can run those as a live room that people join from their phones. Each button starts a new, empty room, since this page does not send your names anywhere, so you would add people in the room itself.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split people into equal teams?
Paste your names, choose Number of groups, and enter how many teams you want. Sizes then differ by at most one, so 12 people in 3 teams gives 4 each. If you would rather fix the team size, choose People per group instead and enter the size.
What happens with an odd number of people?
You choose. Spread evenly makes team sizes differ by at most one. Smaller last group fills every team to the size you asked for and leaves the remainder in the last one. List extras as unassigned keeps every team exact and shows the leftover people separately, handy for substitutes or judges.
How do I keep certain people on different teams?
Open the optional section and add one keep-apart rule per line, with names separated by commas. People on the same line will never share a team. If your rules cannot be met, for example four people kept apart with only three teams, the tool tells you instead of breaking a rule.
Can I re-roll the teams?
Yes. Press Re-shuffle as many times as you like for a new split from the same list. Each shuffle is independent of the last. Changing the names clears the current teams, so you never see people who are no longer on the list.
How do I make teams of 3, 4 or any size?
Switch Split by to People per group and type the size, such as 4. The tool fills teams to that size and handles any remainder using your Uneven numbers choice. For a set number of teams, such as 5 tables, switch back to Number of groups.
Is it really random and fair?
Yes. The shuffle uses the Web Crypto random generator in your browser with a standard unbiased algorithm, so every arrangement is equally likely. Keep-apart rules limit the result to arrangements that obey them, still chosen at random. It does not balance teams by skill, because it knows nothing about the people.
Does it save or upload my names?
No. The shuffle runs in your browser and names are not sent to a server or kept after you close the tab. Only an anonymous count of tool usage is recorded. Copy, CSV or print the result before you leave if you want to keep it.
